The Department of Computer Science at 杏吧论坛鈥檚 College of Science welcomes five new members to its faculty this semester who will help provide the rigorous education needed to guide a new generation of tech leaders, as well as propel the department鈥檚 research endeavors.
Nathaniel Hudson, Yanxue Jia, Yue Dai, and Oliver Michel accepted positions as assistant professors of computer science, while Yun Dong will join as an assistant teaching professor of computer science and information technology and management.
鈥淚 am very excited to welcome the new faculty to the computer science department,鈥 says Mustafa Bilgic, chair of the Department of Computer Science. 鈥淭hey are excellent researchers and educators, spanning a range of areas including systems, AI, cybersecurity, and HCI.鈥
Hudson joins the department after serving as a postdoctoral scholar at the University of Chicago鈥檚 Globus Labs. His research includes the design of systems for serving AI on edge computing infrastructure for smart city applications. It centers around challenges related to resource limitations available at the edge for supporting EI. Trade-offs between latency, accuracy, and resource usage are common themes in the work.
Jia comes to the department after conducting post-doctoral research at Purdue University. She earned a Ph.D. in computer science from Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Her research mainly focuses on applied cryptography, blockchain, secure computation, and provable security. The work is dedicated to designing efficient and secure cryptographic protocols that enhance collaboration while ensuring privacy protection.
Dai earned a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Pittsburgh, and a M.S. in telecommunications from the University of Maryland. She has conducted research in machine learning systems and accelerators, with a focus on efficient systems and robust algorithms for deep graph learning. Specifically, she works on accelerating Graph Neural Network-based deep graph learning models across diverse platforms and exploring the robustness of these applications against adversarial attacks.
Michel was previously an associate research scholar at Princeton University as well as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Vienna. He earned a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Colorado, Boulder. His research interests include networking and network measurement, with a focus on real-time multimedia applications, programmable data planes, and wireless networks.
Dong is a Ph.D. graduate in human-computer interaction from Iowa State University and joins the department after working as an assistant professor at Milwaukee School of Engineering. Her research interests are centered on design thinking and UX design across diverse domains.
鈥淭hese excellent new faculty will further strengthen our research and educational capabilities in our department,鈥 Bilgic says. 鈥淚 am very much looking forward to supporting and collaborating with them.鈥
