The Department of Humanities will host a screening of the documentary, GTFO, as part of ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳'s Women in History Month celebration.

Released in 2015, the film features commentary from developers, journalists, and academics on discrimination and misogyny in the video game industry. Watch the trailer here:

"The treatment of women in the games industry and in the gaming community has been a significant problem historically," says Carly Kocurek, assistant professor of digital humanities and media studies at ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳. "While there are an increasing number of women both playing and making games, the industry still suffers from a lack of diversity by many measures, including gender."

Many women who play games or work in the gaming industry are subject to harassment, Kocurek says.

"This is a contemporary documentary, but one that points to a problem with a really long, entrenched history," she says. "I think these kinds of cultural issues should be of concern to all of us who use, develop, or study technology."
